CIBSE Annual Lecture 2010: So What Does Climate Change Mean For You?

by Richard Howard December 3, 2010

The 2010 CIBSE Annual Lecture was presented by Professor Mike Hulme on 23rd November, 2010 at the Wellcome Foundation in London.
This video comprises his slides plus his audio presentation.

He explains: “Climate change is not ‘a problem’ waiting for ‘a solution’. It is an environmental, political and cultural phenomenon that is reshaping the way we think about ourselves, about our societies and about humanity’s place on Earth. Based on some of the ideas contained in my recent book, Why We Disagree About Climate Change, this lecture dissects this idea of climate change - where it came from, what it means to different people in different places and why we disagree about it. It uses the different standpoints of science, economics, faith, psychology, communication, sociology, politics and development to understand why we disagree about climate change”.

Mike Hulme is Professor of climate change in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). He was the Founding Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research from 2000 to 2007. His work explores the idea of climate change using historical, cultural and scientific analyses, seeking to illuminate the numerous ways in which climate change is deployed in public and political discourse.

His two most recent books are Why We Disagree About Climate Change: understanding controversy, inaction and opportunity (2009) and, with Henry Neufeldt, the edited volume Making Climate Change Work For Us (2010) which is a synthesis of the research findings of the EU FP6 Integrated Project ‘ADAM: Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies’. He is editor-in-chief of the new review journal: Wiley’s Interdisciplinary Reviews (WIREs): Climate Change.

CIBSE 2009 Annual Lecture

by admin September 29, 2009

It has long been said that lighting is a combination of art and science. This year’s CIBSE Annual Lecture, presented by the SLL at the Royal Institution of Great Britain, will consist of two talks that explore each aspect of this combination, beginning with the historical perspective and then looking towards the future.

The Scientists

Dr. Bryson Gore and Dr. Frank James will begin the lecture with a talk on the work of the Royal Institution from the times of Faraday, painting a picture of the scientific fervour that led up to the formation of SLL’s original incarnation as the Illuminating Engineering Society in 1909. In addition to anecdotes about the pioneers of the past, the talk will include artefacts and demonstrations from the Royal Institution’s marvellous collection.

The Designer

Multiple award winning designer Jonathan Speirs will postulate in our second talk that architectural lighting design is primarily about creativity, about inspiration, about the idea. During 25 years in the international arena of architectural lighting design, Jonathan Speirs has been responsible for significantly and consistently promoting the creative approach to light in our built environments. His talk entitled ‘Creativity, Creativity, Creativity!’ will present visual examples of creative lighting design around

the world looking to the past, the present and into the future.
